Iowa Creates a New Vaccine Clinic for Patients with Unique Needs

Iowa's Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) has a new vaccine clinic for children and some adults with unique needs, including sensory issues, anxiety, and other disabilities. Earlier this year, the mother of a child with autism got in touch with CDD, looking for a place to get her child vaccinated against Covid-19. CDD clinical nurse manager Sheree Murphy, RN, took up the challenge, and enlisted the help of UCEDD program coordinator, Anne Crotty, MPH.

OHSU UCEDD: A personal and professional experience

In the summer of 2020, Jan Staehely, communication consultant and staff member at the OHSU Institute on Development and Disability UCEDD, and an individual with Cerebral Palsy who uses an assistive communication device, had a frightening experience. Wildfires were approaching the south-eastern towns near Portland, Oregon and her neighborhood was placed in an evacuation zone.

AUCD Partners with USAging

AUCD is thrilled to be a partner with USAging for the Aging and Disability Vaccination Collaborative, thanks to vital funding from the Administration for Community Living. AUCD's selected Network Centers and Programs are providing needed flu and COVID-19 shots to people with disabilities and older adults to help keep them healthy.

2024 Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leaders Award

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 5:00pm ET.

AAPD is seeking to recognize two (2) emerging leaders or groups with disabilities who exemplify leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the broader cross-disability community. People can apply as an individual or as a group up to four (4) people being recognized for the award. Awardees will receive $7,500 to further a new or existing initiative that increases opportunities for people with disabilities and $2,500 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the disability community.

2023 Residential Information Systems Project Summative Evaluation

The National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) is evaluating the Residential Information Systems Project (RISP). Through this evaluation, NASDDDS will assess the extent to which RISP is meeting the needs of state DD agencies, organizations funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL), elected officials and interested others. The evaluation is funded by the subcontract with the University of Minnesota from the ACL (Cooperative Agreement #90DNPA0001-05).

Prevalence: Extending ICI's Research

For years, researchers at the MN UCEDD have estimated autism prevalence among Minnesota school children. Now the researchers are also estimating the prevalence of cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy.

Nugent Appointed to National Disability Rights Network Board of Directors

Austin Nugent has built bridges between many different parts of the disability community, and she's a Disability Program Administrator at HDI, has been named an At-Large member for the National Disability Rights Network's (NDRN) Board of Directors. That means that she'll help provide oversight to an organization that protects and advocates for people with all sorts of disabilities nationwide, focusing on ensuring that people's rights are protected.

OHSU Institute on Development and Disability UCEDD Expands Impact of Sexual Health Education

The UCEDD at OHSU has implemented The Friendships and Dating Program, created by the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Human Development, in Oregon for the past three years. With its growing success, the FDP has received a grant extension and will continue for another year.

Oregon Health & Science University UCEDD co-Director Receives Honor

Dr. Melanie Fried-Oken was named a fellow of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) at their biennial conference this July 2023 in Cancun, Mexico. For the past 45 years, she has been developing and evaluating tools, strategies, technologies and intervention protocols with adults, children and their families who experience complex communication needs.

AUCD has created a vaccine outreach messaging toolkit. Users can find social media posts with easy-to-download graphics on AUCD's website. The toolkit contains caption copy, Instagram stories, and alt-text tips for each post.
